How to Choose the Right Generator for Your Business
Buying a diesel generator is a long-term commitment. Get it right and you have a decade of reliable backup power; get it wrong and you either overspend on fuel or trip the DG set every time a motor kicks in. 1. Start with your actual load, not a guess
The single biggest mistake we see in Assam is businesses picking a generator based on the neighbour's kVA rating. Instead, list every appliance and machine you need to back up — lights, ACs, computers, lifts, pumps, refrigeration, production machinery — and add up their running wattage. Convert to kVA (divide watts by roughly 800 for a mixed load) and you have your base load.
Don't forget starting current
Motors, compressors and lifts pull 3–7× their running current for a few seconds when starting. A 5 HP motor rated 4 kW may need 15–20 kVA just to start. Add a 25–30% headroom on top of your base load to absorb these spikes safely.
2. Single-phase or three-phase?
Small offices, shops and homes with loads under about 15 kVA usually run fine on single-phase. Anything with three-phase motors — factories, tea gardens, hospitals, hotels — needs a three-phase DG set. Mixing them creates unbalanced loading and shortens generator life.
3. Match the duty cycle
Diesel generators come in three duty ratings:
- Standby (ESP): emergency backup for utility failures — the most common for offices, hospitals, hotels.
- Prime power (PRP): primary source with variable load — tea gardens, construction sites, remote telecom towers in Assam.
- Continuous (COP): 24/7 base-load operation at constant load — rare, industrial only.
Running a standby-rated DG set as prime power will halve its life. Match the rating honestly.
4. Fuel type and efficiency
